Journey Back to Independence

My Journey

“I Just Wanted to Walk Again”: Mr. Pickens’ Journey Back to Independence

When I had my stroke in 2022, my life changed overnight.

I lost complete control of my left side. My arm was flaccid. My leg wouldn’t respond the way I needed it to. Something as simple as standing up or taking a step became exhausting—and honestly, frightening.

I didn’t stop trying, though.

I stayed committed to physical therapy. I worked hard. I used a hemiwalker to get around. But walking never felt safe. Every step took planning. Every surface felt like a risk. I fell more times than I care to admit, and I was constantly scanning my surroundings just to make sure I wouldn’t.

I wanted independence—but I didn’t know how to get it back.

The Referral That Changed Everything

It was actually my physical therapist who first introduced me to Prime Ortho.

They could see how hard I was working—and how much energy I was using just to function. My therapist knew that therapy alone wasn’t enough and that I needed the right technology to support my progress. They encouraged me to look into advanced orthotic solutions and specifically recommended Prime Ortho because of their experience with neurological conditions.

That referral changed everything.

Like a lot of people after stroke, I started researching. I wasn’t looking for a miracle—I was looking for options. Something, or someone, who truly understood what neurological weakness does not just to your body, but to your confidence.

From the very beginning, Prime Ortho didn’t treat me like a limitation. They treated me like someone with potential.

Life Before the Brace

Before working with Prime Ortho, walking required constant compensation.

I had to:

  • Use my core to throw my left leg forward
  • Circumduct my leg just to clear the ground
  • Rely heavily on my right side and my arms for balance
  • Use momentum instead of control

By the end of even a short walk, I was drained.

Sitting down wasn’t much better. I couldn’t control my descent into a chair—I would fall backward with no control and hope I landed safely.

Still, I kept showing up. I went to therapy. I attended family events. I lived at home with my family. I wasn’t ready to give up.

Trying the Tectus Brace

At Prime Ortho, we talked openly about how hard walking still was—and how orthotic technology might help.

When I first tried the Tectus brace, I’ll be honest—it felt heavy and awkward at first. Standing up wasn’t easy.

But then something happened.

As I started walking in the parallel bars, things began to change almost immediately.

  • My arms relaxed instead of acting as balancing tools
  • My shoulders dropped
  • My hips stopped rotating
  • My steps became smoother
  • Walking required less effort

With every pass—10 feet at a time—I felt more confident. By the end, I had walked back and forth 15 times, improving with each step.

And for the first time since my stroke, sitting down felt controlled instead of dangerous.

That was the moment I realized: this could give me my life back.

A New Chapter Begins

I received my custom Tectus brace in November 2025—and from that point on, I committed fully to my recovery.

Even with one flaccid arm, I taught myself how to independently put the brace on.
I progressed from:

  • A rolling walker
  • To forearm crutches
  • To a single cane

Today:

  • I walk independently and confidently
  • I don’t tire easily on long walks
  • I attend meetings and social events again
  • I drive with confidence
  • I walk down stairs leg‑over‑leg
  • I move through crowded spaces without fear of falling

The brace doesn’t just support me—it responds to me. If I stumble, it helps me recover. If I step backward in tight spaces, it keeps me safe. I no longer have to swing my leg around just to walk. I simply walk—more naturally than I ever thought possible again.

Walking Back Into My Life

I had a personal goal throughout this journey.

Not just to walk better—but to walk into my neurologist’s office and show them what I’m capable of now.

And I did exactly that.

Prime Ortho, along with the guidance of my physical therapist, didn’t just give me a brace—they gave me a path forward when I wasn’t sure one still existed.
